NANOBUBBLE TECHNOLOGY

Advanced gas-transfer technology for water, wastewater, environmental remediation and resource recovery.

Moleaerâ„¢ nanobubble technology introduces ultra-fine gas bubbles into water to improve gas transfer and support physical, chemical and biological processes.

Unlike conventional bubbles that rapidly rise to the surface and release their gas, nanobubbles are typically less than 200 nanometres in diameter and can remain suspended in water for extended periods. Their size, stability and enormous surface-area-to-volume ratio enable highly efficient gas transfer and interaction throughout the water column.

Blue Planet South Africa combines Moleaer nanobubble technology with biological and other treatment approaches where appropriate — creating integrated, site-specific solutions rather than one-size-fits-all treatment.

WHAT ARE NANOBUBBLES?

Conventional aeration relies on relatively large bubbles. These rise quickly through the water, with a significant proportion of the gas escaping at the surface.

Nanobubbles operate differently.

At less than 200 nanometres in diameter, they are approximately 2,500 times smaller than a grain of salt. At this scale, Brownian motion becomes more significant than buoyancy, allowing the bubbles to remain suspended and distributed through the liquid rather than rapidly rising and bursting.

This creates a much larger and longer-lasting gas–liquid interface.

The result?

More opportunity for the supplied gas to interact with the water, contaminants, micro-organisms and processes that matter.

Nanobubbles Defy Buoyancy Through Brownian Motion

Nanobubbles behave differently than conventional bubbles because of their size.

While larger bubbles rise quickly due to buoyancy, nanobubbles remain suspended in liquid for extended periods. At the nanoscale, Brownian motion is stronger than buoyancy, allowing nanobubbles to stay suspended and deliver oxygen (or other gases) precisely where it’s needed.

WHY NANOBUBBLES ARE DIFFERENT

< 200 nm
Ultra-fine bubbles

Nanobubbles are typically less than 200 nanometres in diameter. These microscopic entities are thousands of times smaller than salt grains, enabling powerful chemical interactions.

High gas-transfer efficiency

Their nanoscale dimensions provide a very large surface area relative to their volume. Surpass 90% transfer efficiency in shallow basins by maximizing the contact area between phases.

Neutrally buoyant

Rather than rapidly rising to the surface, they remain suspended throughout the liquid. Unlike standard aeration, these stay immersed for months ensuring constant saturation.

Large surface area

Their high surface-area-to-volume ratio allows nanobubbles to interact extensively with their surrounding environment, increasing interaction rates with organic constituents.

Surface properties

Harnessing hydrophobicity and negative charge to support cleaning and separation. Utilizing high internal pressure drives advanced flotation and pathogen neutralization.

Stable and persistent

Nanobubbles can persist in water for extended periods. Innate structural integrity prevents collapse, sustaining superior water quality levels across extended durations.

GAS

Air, oxygen or another appropriate gas is introduced into the nanobubble generator.

NANOBUBBLES

The Moleaer system generates ultra-fine bubbles, typically less than 200 nm.

DISPERSION

The nanobubbles remain suspended and distribute throughout the treated liquid.

GAS TRANSFER

Their large surface area and nanoscale behaviour support efficient transfer of gas into the water.

PROCESS INTERACTION

The resulting conditions can support physical, chemical and biological processes.

PROCESS INTENSIFICATION

Existing treatment processes can potentially operate more efficiently, consistently or with greater capacity — depending on the specific application and site conditions.
